Olive Cotton Bandana with Nikolai Shchukin's Locomotive Series N by Old Pal /Pure Cotton/

A bandana made of lightweight cotton cambric, created as part of a special project by our Old Pal brand, “Transport that takes your breath away.”

 

The theme for this series is the steam locomotive developed in 1891 by engineer Nikolai Leonidovich Shchukin (1848-1924) with the assistance of Belgian engineer Alfred Belpaire (1820-1893).

In 1891, the "N" series steam locomotive, designed for passenger trains, was developed at the Aleksandrovsky Plant in St. Petersburg based on the technical specifications of the Nikolaevskaya Railway (connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow).

The locomotive had a 1-3-0 wheel arrangement (as reflected on the bandana) and a number of other original design features. Wheel arrangement is one of the main characteristics used in classifying steam locomotives.

 

The design speed of the steam locomotive was 115 km/h, and its weight ranged from 43 to 47.9 tons.

 

During this period, steam locomotive construction developed in parallel in Europe and the Russian Empire. Engineers from different countries borrowed many engineering solutions from each other and applied them to their designs, and the results were studied and applied to improving future steam locomotives.
 

This is why Alfred Belpaire, one of Belgium's leading railway engineers of the second half of the 19th century, took part in the development of the "N" series steam locomotive. He visited St. Petersburg for a meeting of the International Railway Commission, of which he was elected chairman in the final years of his life.

 

Between 1892 and 1914, 1,083 "N" series steam locomotives were produced at eight factories. From the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, it remained the most widely used steam locomotive in the Russian Empire and the USSR. By the 1950s, it had almost completely fallen out of use.

 

Unfortunately, not a single intact example survived into the 21st century; they were all dismantled.

 

The repeating pattern elements are based on American bandanas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The 60 x 60 cm size is also based on vintage designs, and the perimeter pattern resembles the edge of a postage stamp, as one of the most important purposes of railroads at that time was mail transportation. The design was created by artist Denis "Ostem" Weber from St. Petersburg.

 

Packaged in a special thin cardboard envelope.

 

The bandana can be worn in any way you like: around the neck, on the head, on clothing, or as an interior decoration.

 

The bandana is available in 6 colors. The print is high-quality and durable. The edges are neatly hemmed and turned up (like vintage American designs).

 

We recommend hand washing in warm water with liquid detergent for delicate fabrics.
