The tam-o’-shanter is the traditional Scottish beret known since the 16th century. Its modern name it got a little later, from the character in the poem by Robert Burns, written in 1790.
Initially, this headgear was worn by warriors. Even in our time, berets like this, although cloth ones, are a part of the British army dress uniform.
Every beret is knitted by hand, and washed in a special way after that. An effect of felt wool appears after the washing, and it can additionally protect from wind and precipice.
The beret rim is made with a special "stretchy" type of knitting. This allows it to be made in sizes M (57-59) and L (60-63), and for 54-56 - in size S.
It fits both men and women.
