A men's Guernsey sweater, hand-knitted for the family-owned Scottish mill, Inverallan.
Hand-knitted garments from Inverallan are noticeably different from more common machine-knitted wool garments in that they have a much denser structure, resulting in a very chunky and heavy garment, like a full-size outerwear piece.
Guernsey is one of the two Channel Islands, hence the name of this sweater. Historically, Guernsey (or gansey) sweaters were hand-knitted and were very warm, providing protection from wind and even moisture.
They are characterized by a very dense, fine knit and traditional patterns.
This is roughly how the knitted clothing of sailors, fishermen, and other coastal dwellers in 19th-century England looked and felt.
A size L sweater weighs approximately 1 kg.
This sweater is knitted from Shetland sheep yarn from the Shetland breed of sheep. For greater authenticity and improved moisture protection, the yarn is not completely degreased; it contains a small amount of lanolin. If you run your hand over the sweater, you'll feel a slight greasy sensation on your fingers.
Inverallan's production is split between their own mill in Alloa, just north of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and one of India's leading hand-knitting factories, boasting excellent working conditions and a responsible approach to the environment.
Suitable for both men and women.
